Nestled in the heart of a quaint rural town, Indy Trails showcase lush landscapes, a vibrant community park, and the winding Verdigris River.
Verdigris Vista – 2.3 Miles
Discover the natural beauty of the Verdigris River along this beautiful trail. The primary trailhead starts at the Ralph Mitchell Zoo and follows the former Interurban train path to Wells Drive. After carefully crossing Wells Drive (the one-way as locals call it) you’ll winding through scenic woodlands while traveling parallel to the Verdigris River. This natural-surface trail is perfect for hiking, trail running, or simply soaking in the sights and sounds of nature. Enjoy glimpses of local wildlife, towering trees, and peaceful river views that make every step a tranquil journey. It’s an ideal route for cyclists, walkers, and joggers looking for an easy-to-navigate path. The lollypop loop will trail will take you down to the Pine Street Dam and loop back to the Park & Zoo on the same path. This trail was built by Brittney Holum with the help of several volunteers, as part of Rural Champion initiative.

Surrounding Independence’s vibrant athletic complex, this paved trail is a hub for community activity. The Central Park Sports Complex Loop invites you to enjoy a leisurely stroll or energizing run while taking in views of well maintained sports fields and family- friendly recreation spaces. This trail is a favorite for fitness enthusiasts, families, and anyone seeking a lively atmosphere.
