Neewollah, The Largest Annual Celebration in Kansas – October 23 -October 31 

Neewollah (that’s Halloween spelled backwards!) began in 1919 in Independence, Kansas, as a creative and positive alternative to the Halloween mischief of the day. What started as a simple series of parades featuring decorated cars, carriages, and local queens, including our very own Queen Neelah, chosen by penny votes, quickly captured the spirit of the community.

Although the festivities paused during the Great Depression and World War II, Neewollah was revived in 1958 by four visionary businessmen who transformed it into a vibrant three-day celebration. Since then, it has grown into a nine-day extravaganza and the largest annual festival in Kansas.

Each October, Independence swells from a charming town of 8,500 to a bustling hub of over 75,000 visitors during the final days of Neewollah. The festival now features three spectacular parades: the whimsical Doo Dah Parade (a lighthearted adult take on the kiddie parade), the Kiddie Parade, and the grand finale—The Grand Parade. Other signature events include a crowd-pleasing Chili Cook-Off, a Broadway-style musical, and the dazzling Queen Neelah Pageant.

Downtown Independence transforms into a festive wonderland with more than 30 food vendors, a large carnival, nightly bandstand entertainment, and a welcoming community atmosphere. An arts and crafts show, a band competition, and a fun run round out the festivities, offering something for everyone.
